Fitness kick!

Hello everyone! I hope you are all well and you have enjoyed Easter!

On good Friday I was in a really reflective mood and I started to take a look at where I am and where I'm headed and the truth is where I am is almost at the end of my college qualification - It has been tough, extremely busy, at times I thought I just wasn't going to make it, there were times where I wanted to give up and times where I really started to resent having no free time and lack of money.

That was the main problem... having no time. Time is something I never really valued or took advantage of I would mope around and complain I was bored - rather than do something for myself.

Anyway back to the point.. In looking at this lack of time - some things have really gotten out of hand and fitness is one of them. In no way am I a gym bunny or a runner or anything like that - this is mainly down to aches and pains from accidents etc - but I do love to do Yoga.

I happened to be scrolling through my Twitter when I came across the lovely lady that is Annie - @Happily_Annie. You can find her blog HERE and if you are into Fitness, health, beauty and fashion then she is definitely worth a read.
Annie posted a picture that really brought home the "omg you need to get back to fitness" thought and once hopping onto her blog it really inspired me and made me want to work out again - I asked Annie for some advice and she happily provided me with some information that I am really grateful for.

As I stated above I'm not really a gym person but I do love yoga - the yoga I do isn't your average yoga. First off I am a huge wrestling fan - that's what you get for having an older brother - and I heard about this yoga in the wrestling world - I was very sceptical about yoga in general but after seeing repeated tweets and reviews on Twitter I decided to look into DDP yoga. I had so many wrong misconceptions about yoga it's unreal! Here's just a few:

  • You have to be flexible and bend like a pretzel - WRONG!
  • This workout is going to be all about famous already fit people - WRONG!
  • Yoga will help rehab issues but won't build muscle - WRONG!
  • I won't be able to do it - WRONG!
What I found was Yoga - lead by an ex wrestler but helping everyday ordinary people just like you and me. An ex wrestler that is very inspirational and motivational - he has a natural feel good you can do it attitude and that is what helped me initially. I purchased the DVD's and I do the workouts at home.
The thing I loved about this is that the book that accompanies the DVDs educates about dairy and gluten and what it does to the body and how to live without it.. but in stages - this is all about the pace you chose to go at. It has detailed workout plans, eating plans, recipes, how to get the most out of the workouts. There is hardly anything that the guy hasn't covered.
The DVD's start at very beginners level, and it's not rushed so you have plenty of times to get the moves right. There is ALWAYS a modification position if you find it too much hard work.

I cried the first time I watched Arthur's story - You can see here:

So the technical stuff... What is DDP yoga?

DDP Yoga is not traditional yoga, it’s a hybrid workout that incorporates some traditional movements and adds dynamic resistance, active breathing techniques and power movements to make for a more challenging and results oriented workout. The main benefits are body fat loss, lean muscle growth, and improved cardio levels all without placing undue stress on the joints. A valid comparison to yoga is they both provide increased flexibility and core strengthening.
I have used this program before and it is great for me - I feel so much better after doing the work outs and my body hurts less. The last time I did this work out I did 7 weeks of it and I saw big changes in my flexibility. I could never do push ups. I had no upper body strength at all - 7 weeks in and I built up enough strength to do slow burn push ups. That is my evidence - My work out was haulted when I fell down the stairs breaking my foot and since then i just haven't had the time. Which was the point of the beginning of the blog.... time. Now thankfully I'm almost done with college I will have the time to get back to me. You can see DDP yoga in action here:

Thanks to Annie giving me the motivational push, this time around I will be adding protein shakes to help increase muscle, minding my calories and doing extra weights to build up quicker.
I plan on keeping you all updated as I go along :D
